A Glimpse Into the Past
Before the Dutch, Swedes, and Brits first established settlements in this area by the Delaware River in the 1600s, the Lenape Indians lovingly called Philadelphia their home. However, it wasn't called Philadelphia back then.
The name is attributed to William Penn, although he was given the land by Charles II of England, he still bought it from the Lenape Indians to ensure that peace reigned in the land. Because Penn experienced discrimination and persecution due to his religious beliefs, he wanted this place to be one where you could freely practice your religion, no matter what it was. And so, combining two Greek words, philos for love or friendship and adelphos for brother, the name Philadelphia was coined and the City of Brotherly Love burst into existence.
Penn had a wonderful plan for the community, but like all great ideas, sometimes they just aren't followed. The conditions in Philadelphia weren't that amazing to begin with but by the 1750s they began to improve with the help of Benjamin Franklin.
Steeped in history, Philadelphia was the site of several battles, the First and Second Continental Congress, and the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. Add all these events along with historic locations, and Philadelphia is really an amazing historical city.
Philadelphia blossomed into the country's first major industrial city with textile being the largest industry back in the 19th century. In 1876, the first official World's Fair was held here and soon after the communities of Philadelphia began to get more diverse with the coming of immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Eastern Europe, and African Americans from the South.
Today, this eclectic mix of people from all backgrounds and wonderful history makes living in Philadelphia, PA real estate a special treat.
